Harford County KiDS Magazine
  Harford County Kids

As many work to reinvent themselves in this economy, it’s refreshing to see a local industry, such as agriculture, that has already made significant inroads in that direction.

It’s also one with a web that spins out to reach many touchpoints of today: supports local business, benefits the environment, provides healthy food and saves money. And, Harford County’s Agricultural Division has worked hard to help farmers diversify and to market their goods and services.

Broom’s Bloom Ice Cream. Andy’s Eggs. Fiore Wine. Deer Creek Beef. Hawks Hill Creamery Cheese. Brad’s Produce. Many of us now use local farm services and products (see our Buyer’s Guide), such as these, perhaps without even relating to them as a “business”. But, as George Mayo, the Maryland Agricultural Educational Foundation’s Executive Director points out, “Most people think of agriculture as farming. That’s what it was, but agriculture is so much more now.”

Not only is it nice to directly support local business but it’s fun too. The whole shopping experience is different than in a store. Stop and talk with the farmers at one of the Farmers Markets. Join with the White House, and plant your own garden with the kids. Get out and enjoy Farm Visitation Day, the Twilight Markets at Rockfield Manor or Pick-Your-Own at a local farm. There are now a half of a dozen farms right here in the County where you can buy into a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) to get produce directly off of the farm.

Enjoy!

Harford County Kids MagazineTM is now available as a digital edition.

The digital edition reproduces the print edition much as you see it but with additional enhancements. There is no additional software or downloading required and you can view the publication from the majority of web browsers in use. Plus, saving paper on printing helps to keep us all “green.” Once you sign up for the digital edition at www.harfordcountykids.com, you’ll receive email notification each month when it’s available to view.
